A New  Triple Eclipse series on Hand

Partha Desikan

The world is about to witness a rare astronomical event - a series of triple eclipses, beginning July 2009. The first in the series of triple eclipses will be a lunar eclipse on July 7, 2009 followed by a solar eclipse on July 22, 2009, and another lunar eclipse on August 6, 2009. 6 more such triple eclipses will happen over the next decade until 2020.

The Triple Eclipse Series will begin in July 09. What does this mean for the world apart from providing a succession of lunar and solar spectacles for study in the sky? Will a rapid succession of simple cosmic events have a pronounced cumulative undesirable effect on the collective psyche of the human race any more than the modern version of the race is able to manage to effect on its own? Are their measurable significant biological effects, simply because of successive eclipses in a short while? Though mankind seems to have records of only some four such clustered events, is there any understanding of why such arrangements come about in the otherwise well understood  geometry of the movements of our immediate celestial neighbours?

Elucidating on his research on triple eclipses, Mr. DK Hari of Art of Living Foundation is supposed to have said, "The first recorded triple eclipse in 3067 BCE (Before Common Era) coincided with the Kurukshetra war. The destruction of the city of Dwaraka coincided with another set of triple eclipse in 3031 BCE. More recently, the first half of the 20th century saw the occurrence of a series of triple eclipses between 1910 and 1945, which coincided with World Wars I & II, the Holocaust and the nuclear bombings in Japan!"

The following press release was downloaded around 06-45 pm at Bangalore, Karnataka, India on 23rd June ,2009.

What does this celestial phenomenon mean for the world? Does this astronomical event portend anything for us at all? These were the questions the husband and wife team of DK Hari and DK Hema Hari discussed at a review of their book - "Will History Repeat Itself? Triple Eclipse of July 2009. Ominous? Promising?"

Using a holistic and inter-disciplinary approach that marries traditional knowledge of India with the developments in modern science, the authors examined what the upcoming triple eclipse series signify.

Elucidating on his research on triple eclipses, DK Hari said, "The first recorded triple eclipse in 3067 BCE (Before Common Era) coincided with the Kurukshetra war.

His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, humanitarian whose Art of Living foundation is publishing the book says, "Everything in this world is connected. Everything affects everything else. The microcosm and the macrocosm are all interconnected. An analysis of this principle of cause and effect will open a new dimension in life."

So what is likely to happen as the triple eclipse series begin in July 2009?

"The important concern for India today is that it is surrounded by many nations which are under the duress of internal political strife - such as Pakistan, Tibet, Nepal, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The potential for this strife overflowing into India is high coinciding with the beginning of the triple eclipse series of July '09" said DK Hari & DK Hema Hari.

In the face of imminent wars and strifes, the authors show how ancient Indian society conducted their politics and drew out the essence for such situations.

Discussing about the disaster management capabilities of the world at large today, they raised a provocative thought as to whether the nations today are prepared, flexible and open enough in heart, mind, politics and religion to accept refuge seekers - the way the ancient societies had in the face of large-scale migrations resulting from large man-made or natural calamities?

The authors further brought out how each of these tumultuous periods had also ushered in a ring of hope, and opened up for thought, the possible positive effect the triple eclipse season starting 2009 could usher in.

"This earth is part of that sky" - a simple but profound statement from the authors, brought out the fact that we are all part of nature and the way going forward is to understand the role nature plays in our thought, action and lives and to shape our lives and actions to be in sync with nature.

Commenting on the relevance of DK Hari and Hema Hari's work, Sri Sri said, "While Astronomy / Astrology studies the science of happenings, spirituality is the remedy. While Astronomy / Astrology indicates the powerlessness of human beings, spirituality brings to light the power within."

Beliefs
written by narensomu, 2009-07-22 03:43:03
Dear Partha
I think you would also have noticed the media hype this time about
" superstitions" related to the eclipse.

Some baseless beliefs do exist but media seems to be hyping/making fun of how people were followind age old customes in this regard.

The effects of a phenomenon like this hasnt been fully understood by modern Science yet and if people believe cooked food shouldnt be kept during that period and eaten later , what's wrong in that?

Mothers delaying their deliveries is pretty drastic and shouldnt be done.
This may be in league with some baseless beliefs about some stars.[ Moolam bad for Father in law type of beliefs]

Kumudam Jodidam, as usual, would give a clear picture of things i think.

Temples are kept closed during that period -must have sound reasons but flippant articles about this are all over the media.

As for the grand spectacle, the IAF video seems very interesting to watch.

sorry to disappoint you

Dear Sreeparna,
Some domestic compulsions kept me home this morning and in any case the it was as cloudy as in the past few days and the Sun was behind the clouds most of the morning.
You and I will both have to be satisfied with pictures rolled out by the press and the media.
I am sorry. Regards. Partha.

Can you share this wonderful total solar eclipse?
written by Parnal91, 2009-07-21 12:35:12
Hi Partha,

It looks like we in the US will not be able to view this wonderful celestial phenomenon. And India will be able to see this total solar eclipse. I still have some memory from the last total solar eclipse 1980? I was a little girl and it was a big affair..it became dark and the birds got confused. I was in Kolkata, they were showing eclipse coverage and "Pather Panchali" Satyajit Ray's movie. It was very special occassion, so my memory is vivid...smilies/smiley.gif)

Regards,
Sreeparna

Celestial shows
written by narensomu, 2009-07-05 00:20:16
Dear Partha
Sorry, I am not at all qualified to answer the questions you pose but think can put in my two cents/rupees on astronomical phenomena.
May be they are celestial warnings meaning, we still have a chance to clear the mess we have made as humans?
Thanks for sharing the info with us.
One of the lunar eclipses seems to be falling on Guru Purnima day.

At least two of these not visible in India
written by P. Desikan, 2009-07-04 20:02:22
Whoever is preparing an answer for my question 4, may also be interested in the report that the July 7 eclipse is a penumbral lunar eclipse and will not be visible to the naked eye. Through a telescope, what does one expect to see?
The August 5 eclipse will apparently come about only in early morning hours in parts of North India and in Nepal. so most of us in India do not get to see any part of these two celestial phenomena.
Rwegards. Partha.

repeating question 4
written by P. Desikan, 2009-06-28 22:54:15
My four questions are in bold type almost at the beginning of the article. There is a typo in question 3 which should have begun with 'Are there' and not 'Are their'. Question 4 is specifically addressed to Medhavis with astronomical knowledge. I have none but I have curiosity. Therefore through this comment I am repeating question 4.
Regards. Partha.
