Description

Seva (Say-va) is a sanskrit word for "service". Here the aim is to bring together like-minded Medhavis to alleviate suffering caused by low income generation, lack of capability; our approach is to build partnerships to respond to locally defined problems with culturally sustainable solutions.

ANKURA is a non-profit organization working with the poor and marginalized people around the world towards making a sustainable improvement in their quality of lives through educational, technological, social and economic empowerment.

Founded by professionals from different walks of life but working towards a common goal, ANKURA strives to bring social and economic equity to the under-privileged through innovatively utilizing existing resources and know-how available in their community.

It is hoped that this will not only create economic sustenance for the poor but also pave the way for social and economic development of the entire community as jobs and micro-entrepreneurial opportunities are created.

ANKURA is entirely volunteer driven and we work with social entrepreneurs and partner with non-profits in the developing world to support projects that have a measurable impact, are sustainable and scalable.

Initiative by some Medhavis.  For more information visit; http://www.ankura.org/

Discussions

Foreign aid rarely works in alleviating poverty. Poverty declines only when the local people and their leaders decide to adopt policies that reduce poverty.

I think that networking ideas or promoting our similar concepts towards the well being of all of us as writers is something we need to consider as an aspect of our own social entreprenuership of the work we are producing. Granted a part of our Seva or overall service to contribute our ideas or knowledge is to get our work out there so those taking interest can gather insight. Our Seva at the same time is similar to work for Krishna where we are willing to write outside of ourselves though I think we need to work on marketing articles to some extent or printing books that are made up of articles or work of several authors who compliment a certain perspective or focus. The book THE BEST BUDDHIST WRITING a SHAMBHALA SUN publication is a great example. JIM

Hi Melanie,

Can you elaborate a little more as to how one can teach people to change their perceptions about poverty? It sounds like a very interesting concept.

May I say that the only way to alleviate poverty is to teach people to change their perceptions, it all starts with what is in your heart, and since not all will understand the concept, then you will always have your poor.
