Laghu Sandhya Vandanam (LSV) -The Concise TSV

Background

Life on this planet becomes more complex as intelligence evolves. This poses a challenge to the evolution of intelligence itself, as mind aspires far beyond the capabilities of our body and the environment.

Every individual including kids are under tremendous pressure to achieve something these days. When faced with tough, challenging situations our mind loses its balance, spreads negativity all around and pushes our body beyond its limits.

Tri-Kala Sandhya Vandanam is a daily procedure to synchronize our mind and body with our environment. It is supposed to be done three times a day to achieve this perfect synchronization. In my personal experience, doing it one or two times a day is also highly effective.

This procedure is done by a combination of Mantras (Verses with specific meanings) and Tantras (physical procedures). The Mantras involved in this procedure are based on the principle that thoughts of mind influence the body and our consciousness.

The Tantras involved in this procedure helps our physical metabolism, body- mind synchronization and enables us to remain fit physically. Note that these mantra-tantras can also be used outside the Sandhyavandanam procedure in different situations.

Thus TSV is a ‘wholesome training and synchronization’ procedure for our body (brain, heart, lungs) as well as mind (consciousness, thoughts).

Why TSV..?

This synchronization of body and mind helps to reduce the Blood Pressure caused by anxiety and distress. When practiced continuously with understanding, one can clearly notice a ‘decline’ in their ‘anxiety levels’ and ‘stress levels’.

Major gain I have felt is that it helps me to keep cool and calm even under major provoking conditions. I used to shout and sometimes indulge in verbal abuse under mental stress. Once I started on this procedure regularly that reduced drastically. I am able to be stable with complete peace of mind under all circumstances.

This procedure could help improve metabolism of body and control diseases like diabetics, which in turn could reduce the chance of heart diseases. I do not have hard data on this, but I can feel that it betters our metabolism. In any case, this synchronization of body and mind is extremely critical in the modern world.

Practise TSV. TSV is the only way we can ingrain positive qualities in us, in our deep conscience.

Anyone practicing it will feel a continuous bliss inside at all times. This is my experience. That’s why I do it.

Laghu Sandhya Vandanam – LSV

For those who had an opportunity to learn TSV formally,  I recommend to follow your Guru, follow whatever has been taught to you.

The correct and ideal TSV is the regular TSV that is taught by the tradition. It is a complete procedure if we go through it with concentration.  I follow the regular TSV procedure normally.

I go through a LSV in case where I am not able to do it fully.

·         Let’s say you are new to TSV.  Then LSV is for you.

·         Let’s say you have lunch or working lunch at office.  Spend 10 mins on LSV to rejuvenate yourself.

·         Let’s say you need to rush to airport in the morning. Spend 10 mins on LSV either at home or when travelling.

·          Let’s say it becomes late at night to reach home.  Spend 10 mins on LSV just before dinner to get peaceful sleep.

·         Let’s say you are not a Hindu, still you can do LSV in the name of Christ or Allah or Buddha or any one. I am planning to write a specific LSV for any religion.

·         Let’s say you are an atheist, still do LSV as it is all about yourself and boot-strapping yourself.

Practise LSV and Enjoy!

The Concept behind LSV

A real meditation is a process of positive thinking when our body and mind are tamed down and synchronized. In such a state positive thoughts enter our deepest conscience and start guiding us from our inside during our normal times. This is the concept behind TSV and LSV.

When this LSV is done three times a day, the positive qualities ingrain in our deep conscience and one can feel the bliss ever.

If one is interested then they can think of the meanings of the mantras. It would be more beneficial.  It is optional depending on the outlook.

The steps of LSV

1.       Taming down our mind by Achamanam, Anga-vandanam, Ganapati Dyanam, Argya Pradhanam and Aikya-anusandhanam

2.       Taming down our body by Pranayama

3.       Synchronizing body and mind by Japam, Upasthanam, Abivandanam and Samarpanam

Disclaimer on LSV

There is no vedic sanctity for LSV. It is a procedure that I follow when I am faced with time crunch, though I regularly try to do TSV. I have seen LSV very effective on me.

Laghu Sandhya Vandanam for Sanskritized Hindus (425 seconds)

Achamanam and Anga-Vandanam (Time 20 seconds)

If possible to sit in a half-sitting posture, please do so. Else in any seating posture, sip water three times reciting the following mantras.

Acyutaya Nama (Sip water once)

Anantaya Nama (Sip water twice)

Govindaya Nama (Sip thrice)

Sipping small quantities of water refreshes us physiologically. Now we are able to concentrate better.

Recite the following with action as stated here. Recite the wording and action synchronously and slowly. Do not hurry up in your action. Let the word and action synchronize and sink in you.

Kesava (touch the right cheek with right thumb)

Narayana ( touch the left cheek with right thumb)

Madhava (touch the right-most end of right eye  with right ring finger)

Govinda (touch the left-most end of left eye  with right ring finger)

Vishnu (touch the right nose with right index finger)

Madhusudhana (touch the left nose with right index finger)

Trivikrama (touch the right ear lobe with right little finger)

Vamana (touch the left ear lobe with right little finger)

Sridhara (touch the right shoulder with right middle finger)

Hrsikesa  (touch the left shoulder with right middle finger)

Padmanabha (touch the navel with all fingers pointed)

Damodara (touch the top of the head with all fingers pointed)

The above actions synchronize our thoughts and actions in brain. With this synchronization we are able to focus better. Do this with full concentration. In fact this procedure will help you in concentration.

Ganapati Dyanam (Invoking Peace) (Time 10 seconds)

Recite the following mantra, while gently tapping the both temples with knuckles.

Shuklam bhaRtram Vishnum

Sasi Varnam ChathurBhujam

Prasanna Vadanam Dyayeth

 Sarva Vigna Upa Santhaye

Think of the following now as it is or the meaning of it in your mother tongue

“With pure (Shuklam), protecting (BhaRtram), ever-working (Vishnum), reflecting (Sasi-varnam), pleasantly expressed (Prasanna vadanam)  thoughts (dyayeth), I invoke peace in all my actions”

Or simply

“With pure and pleasant thoughts Let me be at peace in all my actions”

Argya Pradhanam (Inviting the Self-arousing property inside us as our guest)

(Time 30 seconds)

Join both hands together and take hand full of water taking care not to join both thumbs with other fingers (facing east during Pratha Sandhya, facing north during Madyannikam, and facing west during Sayam Sandhya) repeat the following mantra and then pour the water as if we are offering water.

Think of the meaning provided here, at the end of every line, as given here or the meaning of it in your mother tongue.

Om

Bhu Bhuva Sva

Tat savithur varenyam  (That respected Self-arouser)

bhargo devasya deemahi (Causing that Divine Radiance)

Dhiyo yona prachodayath (I invoke it me)

Recite the above 2 or 3 times, each time offering water.  If water is not there, welcome the guest with a pleasant face.

In this procedure we offer water to a guest (argyam). The guest we invite into us is the ‘Savitr’ that causes the divine illuminance. If we do not have water to offer the guest, we can still invite the guest with pleasant face. Hence proceed mentally reciting it, if water cannot be offered.

Pranayama – Breathe Control (Time 20 seconds)

Think of the following mantras as you inhale through the left nose, while keeping the right nose closed with right thumb, slowly till the end of the mantra.

OM Bhu

OM Bhuva

OM Suva

OM Maha

OM Jana

OM Tapa

Ohum Satyam

Om

Tat savithur varenyam

bhargo devasya deemahi

Dhiyo yona prachodayath

Now exhale the breadth slowly through your right nose , while blocking the left nose with ring and middle fingers,  while thinking of the following mantras in such a way that u exhale completely when you finish the mantra.

Om

Apa

Jyoti rasa

Amrtam

Brahma

Bhu

Bhuva

Svar

Om

Think of the following now or the meaning of it in your mother tongue

“That respected Self-arouser invoking the divine illuminance, I invoke that radiance in me. By that Radiance (flaming) immortality is achieved”

‘Apa’ that can flame is the immortal creator in Earth, Galaxy, Cosmos and Universe. Apa can be variously explained as ‘celestial waters’, ‘water’, ‘alkaline substance’, ‘Base medium of life’ etc.

In other words immortality can only be achieved by flaming or transferring of energy and life to something else and hence one that radiates becomes immortal. Hence we seek the radiance in first place.

When we inhale we seek radiance, when we exhale we say we seek radiance to become immortal.

Recite the following mantra one by one.  This is extremely important to stabilize our breath and make it normal.

Om (touch the right ear with right hand and take it off)

Om (touch the right ear with right hand and take it off)

Om (touch the right ear with right hand and take it off)

Prayaschitha Argyam (Time: 10 seconds)

Close your eyes. Recite the following mantra, thinking of its meaning in the morning.

Om yadathya  gacha vruthrahan

Udayaa abhisoorya

sarvaan dathindra they vache

Think of the following now “Let the Savitr  rise over all my dis-beliefs. Let me be self-confident”

Close both the eyes. Touch the middle of chest with both hands. Recite the following mantra

Asaavadhityo  brahma. Brahamaivahamasmi

Meditate on the following now “Let me be aligned to the creation and become Aditya (Originator)”

As the Sun is self-aroused by Savitr (nuclear fusion) caused by Bhuva (heat/pressure) and creates all of us, we need to self-arise over our dis-beliefs to further the creation.

Ten times Pranayama –  Ten times Breathe Control (Time: 150 seconds)

Om

Apa

Jyoti rasa

Amrtam

Brahma

Bhu

Bhuva

Svar

Om

Do the inhaling and exhaling slowly without pressurizing yourself, without getting into a breatheless situation. The idea here is not quick breathing or deep breathing. It is very slow breathing. You inhale slowly till the inhaling mantra is recited. You exhale slowy till the exhaling mantra is recited.

Repeat the above 10 times (inhaling and exhaling).

Think of the following now “That respected Self-arouser invoking the divine illuminance, I invoke that radiance in me. By that radiance (flaming) immortality is achieved”

Recite the following mantra one by one.  This is extremely important to stabilize our breath and make it normal.

Om (touch the right ear with right hand and take it off)

Om (touch the right ear with right hand and take it off)

Om (touch the right ear with right hand and take it off)

Gayatri Japam (Time: 120 seconds)

Close your eyes. Concentrate and Recite the following Mantra atleast  18 times.

Think of the meaning provided here, at the end of  every line, as given here or the meaning of it in your mother tongue.

Om (Universe)

Bhu Bhuva Sva (arises from fire/heat on its own)

Tat savithur varenyam  (That respected Savitr)

bhargo devasya deemahi(Causing that Divine Radiance)

Dhiyo yona prachodayath (Invoke that in me)

If one thinks of the meaning and invokes that savitr even 18 times is enough. Ideally it needs to be done 108 times to get good benefit.

Pranayama – Breathe Control (Time: 20 seconds)

By that Radiance (flaming) I become immortal”

Recite the following mantra one by one.  This is extremely important to stabilize our breath and make it normal.

Om (touch the right ear with right hand and take it off)

Om (touch the right ear with right hand and take it off)

Om (touch the right ear with right hand and take it off)

Gayatri Upasthanam (Time 20 seconds)

Close your eyes and recite the following mantra.

Utame shikare Jate bhumya Parvata Murdhani

Brahmane bhyobhya anujJata gaccha devi Yatha Sukham

Think of the following or the meaning of it in your mother tongue

“ Let me acquire illuminance and regenerate the divine forces and create the best of best through evolution”

Samashti Abhivandanam (Time 10 seconds)

And then recite the following mantra

Kamo kArshit manyur akArshit namo nama.

Think of the following or the meaning of it in your mother tongue

Provider of the desire to create, Remover of our indignation (against creation), the one who resides in its creation, I salute thee

Here the creation and desire for creation does not refer to just sexual prowess.

Desire to create (Kama)  is the desire to create beings of higher intelligence through radiating whatever we have without fear. It could be knowledge, wealth, love etc. Similarly our indignation against creation refers to our withholding of knowledge, wealth, love that would block the evolution.

Hence it is  not just about progeny or sexual activity for creation. The fundamental principle is we radiate what we have fearlessly and that creates higher intelligence beings. It is applicable for sexual prowess as well as knowledge, wealth, wisdom, kindness, love etc.

Namaskara and Samarpana (Time 20 seconds)

Do a physical or Mental Namaskara to symbolize the bodily submission to that one.  Then recite the following mantra, while pouring water. If water is not available, then with all humility recite the mantra.

Kaye na vacha manase indriyair va

Budhyathma nava prakruthai swabhavat.

Karomi yadyat sakalam parasmai ,

Narayana yethi samarpayami

Now think of the following or the meaning of it in your mother tongue

Let me dedicate actions that are performed knowingly and those out of my control to that one who resides in its creation. Let me be aligned to His wishes”

Recite the beginning and end of everything

“AUM”.
