Trikala Sandhya Vandhanam (TSV) series – Introduction

Let me state first that I am neither a Yoga selling Baba nor Spiritualism selling Swamiji. What I write here are out of my own research, practice and experience that I wanted to share with  a larger audience for the common good.

The interpretations of found here are completely mine and based on the work that I have been doing for some time. I see a great commonality and continuity in the Vedic scriptures, in the way I have translated them across the Vedas, Upanishads and Sastras. You can find them spread around in several of my blogs. This continuity I find, gives me a confidence that I am on the right track.

Tri-kala SandhyaVandhanam (TSV) – Mind and Body synchronization

Life on this planet becomes more complex as intelligence evolves. This poses a challenge to the evolution of intelligence itself, as mind aspires far beyond the capabilities of our body and the environment.

Every individual including kids are under tremendous pressure to achieve something these days. When faced with tough, challenging situations our mind loses its balance, spreads negativity all around and pushes our body beyond its limits.

Tri-Kala Sandhya Vandanam is a daily procedure to synchronize our mind and body with our environment. It is supposed to be done three times a day to achieve this perfect synchronization. In my personal experience, doing it one or two times a day is also highly effective.

This procedure is done by a combination of Mantras (Verses with specific meanings) and Tantras (physical procedures). The Mantras involved in this procedure are based on the principle that thoughts of mind influence the body and our consciousness.

The Tantras involved in this procedure helps our physical metabolism, body- mind synchronization and enables us to remain fit physically. Note that these mantra-tantras can also be used outside the Sandhyavandanam procedure in different situations.

Thus TSV is a ‘wholesome training and synchronization’ procedure for our body (brain, heart, lungs) as well as mind (consciousness, thoughts).

Why TSV..?

This synchronization of body and mind helps to reduce the Blood Pressure caused by anxiety and distress. When practiced continuously with understanding, one can clearly notice a ‘decline’ in their ‘anxiety levels’ and ‘stress levels’.

Major gain I have felt is that it helps me to keep cool and calm even under major provoking conditions. I used to shout and sometimes indulge in verbal abuse under mental stress. Once I started on this procedure regularly that reduced drastically. I am able to be stable with complete peace of mind under all circumstances.

This procedure could help improve metabolism of body and control diseases like diabetics, which in turn could reduce the chance of heart diseases. I do not have hard data on this, but I can feel that it betters our metabolism. In any case, this synchronization of body and mind is extremely critical in the modern world.

TSV – A beneficial habit

The key thing is that TSV is NOT a remedy. It is a preventive technique.  If this procedure is inculcated in the young age, it would tremendously benefit the individual. Even otherwise, it can be started by anyone at any age.

TSV can be done by any individual of any age, sex, religion, caste, irrespective of their existing ailments.  In particular the simplified version that I plan to write would be easily understandable, doable and might align to any religious belief.

In my view it can be done any time, with empty stomach. Hence availability of time is not a factor. I do it just before food in the night (as most evenings I would be working). I do it just before having breakfast (as at dawn I may be sleeping). Ideally it is done in the dawn and dusk times.

Sad, in the modern world, this practice has been abandoned. It has been abandoned as people do not realize its value. Even people who ‘think’ that there could be some value in it, fear the complexity of mantras and the content that appears as meaningless. Hence it has lost out its value and utility.

TSV, in comparison to several meditation techniques and yogic procedures is simpler and more powerful. Yoga has morphed and mixed with western style aerobic exercises and has become a procedure of body, in the way it is taught by modern gurus. In reality Yoga is a procedure of body and mind. But that has been almost lost out.

Meditation has morphed and become a procedure of mind in the way it is taught by modern gurus.

TSV, a procedure that has been preserved for the last 5000 years or so, in the same form serves as a procedure for body and mind. Why not follow a simple TSV taught by the original ‘Gurus’..?

How do we achieve this body-mind synchronization..?

Science says that we have evolved out of the star-dust, which evolved out of a ‘Big-Bang’, beyond which we do not know what exists. Vedas state that it is the ‘Atma’ which resides beyond everything and from which we came and our consciousness is the reflection of that Atma and its desire to evolve.

Visualize yourself, boarding a ‘space-flight’ and making a journey to the abode of ‘Atman’. You travel back in time through the biological and planetary evolution, to the gas-clouds that formed the Solar system, reach the abode of that Atma, salute the forces that emerged from that abode, dedicate all our actions to that Atma and come back to this world to continue our work.

The ‘Atman’ here could be ‘Atma (who manifested as Narayana)’, ‘Father (whose son came to save us)’, “Allah (whose prophet came and gave us peace)” or just anyone according to one’s beliefs.

By undertaking this mental journey we see ourselves at peace with the larger scheme of things in the Universe. We see the Big picture. We dedicate all our actions to that continuum of evolution.

This is TSV. We make use of several mantra-tantras to make this journey.  I plan to write a simplified version of it, which can be used by anyone without getting into conflict with religious beliefs and that can be done easily.

Note that the original TSV is the BEST and is EASY. But for those who have difficulties with Sanskrit and who perceive that TSV is religious, this simplified procedure could be used.

TSV – Steps of the Elaborate Procedure

1. Start the Journey to Atma’s Abode  (Achamanam/Anga Vandanam)

2. Invoke the Consciousness in us to provide peace in our actions

3. Tame down body by breathe control

4. Take bath and drink water from a ‘protected’ body of water (say well)

5. Take bath in a body of water exposed to Sun.

6. Invite Savitr that creates the Sun, to come into us and ignite us.

7. Invoke that Savitr to kill all the dis-beliefs and false-egos in us. Thus the power that makes the Sun becomes the ‘self-confidence’ in us.

8. By invoking that self-confidence, feel capable of become part of the evolution process

9.  Offer obeisance to the material and biological evolution/planetary evolution that created us.

10. Recite the destination (Paramatma Devatha) and the route (Devas) to reach the Atma’s Abode.

11.  Tame your body down with Pranayama

12.  Tame your mind with Gayatri Japa

13. Travel forward and Reach the Aditya (Gas-clouds) from which Solar system/planets evolved. You have reached the gates of Atman.

14. Salute the directions that spread from there.

15. Salute the ‘Control’ (Yama) that spreads as time, death, memory and balances the evolution

16.Salute  the ‘Dark Matter’ (Purusha) that guides the evolution of matter.

17.Salute the ‘Matter’ with the ‘Atma’ in it, which is called Narayana.

18. Salute the ‘Kesava’, the primitive matter form that came from the Atma.

19. Dedicate all our actions to that Narayana (Kesava with Atma)

20.End the journey by returning to place we started (Achamanam /Angavandanam)

As one could see, this is a process where we invoke our self-confidence, kill the false-egos, control our body and mind, visualize the forces that evolved us, see ourselves as a small part of the Big Picture, dedicate our actions to those forces that are in the pursuit of evolution. Simply to be aligned and in perfect peace with ourselves and everything happening around us.

Thus, we concentrate, do breathe control, meditate and see the big picture in which we are a small part, dedicate our actions to those forces by doing this procedure daily. What else could be such a wholesome procedure including body and mind than this..?

Several tantras of it like Achamanam, Anga-Vandanam, Aikya-sandhanam, Pranayamam, Gayatri Japam can be used independent of TSV in different situations.
